On the 11th day of the 11th month, the annual Armistice Day memorial took place at the War Memorial in Llanwrtyd. County and Town Councillor Colonel Tim Van-Rees and John Stocker representing the church presided over the service. Several reefs were laid to honour the war dead of World War 1 and 2. Bromsgrove School were represented by 95-year-old Christopher Price. Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire has a special bond with Llanwrtyd.
During World War 2 Bromsgrove School, in Worcestershire was requisitioned by the War Ministry and in 1939 the school was evacuated to Llanwrtyd at very short notice. The Abernant Lake Hotel was adopted as the main school site, hotels and guest houses became dormitories; teaching staff were accommodated in the village and classrooms set up in Chapel Vestries and the Church Hall; Victoria Hall became the Assembly Hall. It was a mammoth task to relocate the school in a matter of weeks and the new term opened on 22nd September 1939. Subsequently, one year later a Junior School was established in The Hall on Station Road. Llanwrtyd welcomed their new residents with an open heart and a strong bond has continued to this day between old Bromsgrovians the School and the people of Llanwrtyd. This close relationship was formalised in 2007 when the school was granted the Freedom of the Town.
Staff and pupils of the School were called up for duty during the war and the names those who fell are remembered on the Roll of Honour in the entrance to our War Memorial Institute. It has become a tradition that representatives of Old Bromsgrovians and the School attend our annual Remembrance Day Service and this year again we welcomed Mr Christopher Price, who attended the school in Llanwrtyd, laid a wreath on behalf of the Governors, Staff and Pupils in memory of those who fell.
